About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Boy Dies in 1,900-foot Fall

Who: 16-year-old Michael Manning
Where: San Emigdio Mountains, California
His mistake: It’s unknown. We know he fell, just don’t know how.
What happened: A teen and some friends were hiking in the local mountains when one of them somehow fell down 1,900 feet from a cliff. Another person in the group immediately called 911 and help was on its way.

The first responder was able to get himself down to the body and found the boy alive with faint vital signs. Shortly after, the boy passed away, and the rescuer found himself stuck at the bottom of the canyon with no way out. Because of the steep terrain and approaching sunset, the rescuer and the boy’s body weren’t recovered until the next day.

Rescuers set up ropes and a pulley system to haul both people out. The body of the boy was hiked out by rescuers. Unfortunately we don’t know more about the accident. I will update if more interesting info surfaces.

I wonder how prepared for a hike teh boy really was and how experienced? Too many times I here in teh news about people going for long mountian hikes only packing snack cakes then wonder why bad things happen to them.

I would like to know more details about this.
