About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Czech Climber Missing in Nepal

Who: 42-year-old Martin Minarik
Where: Annapurna, an 8,091-meter peak in the Himalayas
His mistake: Looks like he pushed too hard in unforgiving weather
What happened: A climber along with his friend, Sloval Dodo Kopold and French climber, Elisabeth Revol, were attempting to climb Annapurna.

On their first attempt, high winds turned them around. Kopold had enough and got off the mountain. The remaining two climbers decided to stay and make another attempt later.

During their second attempt, the two climbers reached 8,016 meters, just 85 meters short of the summit. But high winds again were pounding the mountain and the two were forced to turn around. Minarik began suffering from frostbite and exhaustion. Revol was not able to help him and continued down the mountain alone. She was later seen by a chopper and plucked off.

As for Minarik, he is still missing. After days of searching with teams on foot and in choppers, the search was eventually called off. There was no sign of Minarik on the mountain.

I am Martin Minarik’s wife. You have your facts wrong. You have your facts wrong because you are relying on what other people have written and what they have written, is wrong. But you assume that because it is in writing, it must be true. For example Dodo did not “give up”, he went on to solo another route on Annapurna. Nor was Elisabeth plucked off the mountain by the helicopter. SHe reached the village of Manang and called a helicopter. Martin was not 42 years old. This was to be Martin’s 8th 8,000 m peak – I am sure he was exhausted descending every one of them.

I am curious, as to why you are absorbed in reporting stuff you cannot verify on your own. It can be very damaging for others to read, for example, his children.

You did not know Martin. THerefore please do not write about him.
