Who: 17-year-old Scott Mason
Where: White Mountains, New Hampshire
His mistake: He went out alone, but he did do a lot of things right
What happened: A teen eagle scout set out for a 17-mile hike on his own in the Presidential Range towards Mount Washington. The warm weather was nice, but the sun also contributed to increased snow melt.
When the teen came to a stream crossing, he thought it was too dangerous to cross. So he veered off course and tried to find a way around. When he went off trail, he became lost and unable to find his way back.
A search was started when he didn’t return. During the 3-day search, rescuers found footprints and tracks that looked like they were from a lost hiker. On Tuesday, the boy was found near the summit of Mount Washington.
He was in good condition, but his exact survival techniques are unknown. Authorities did say he was able to start a fire one night because he had matches with him. The teen’s eagle scout master said he believes the teen used a lot of survival techniques taught in scouts.
I’l post more info if anything interesting surfaces.
