About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Elderly Man and Woman Stuck in Ravine

Who: 75-year-old Julie Barney and 91-year-old Bill Duncan
Where: Foothills Park, Palo Alto, California
Their mistake: It was a simple slip for the first victim. The second guy went into the ravine to be the hero and ended up getting stuck himself.
What happened: A woman, man and a third person were hiking on a steep section of trail when the woman slipped and fell into a 50-foot ravine. The man climbed down into the ravine to help her, but he also became stuck in the ravine.

Two other hikers heard the screams for help and assisted. One of the hikers dropped into the ravine to help the elderly hikers. The other hiker continued down the trail and called for help.

Authorities said they might have been able to get out on their own, but it was safer with rescue personnel on scene. None of the hikers suffered injuries, but they were cold and tired.
