Who: Four Austrian climbers ages 23 to 35 years.
Where: Rax mountains, Austria. The Rax is a mountain range at the border of the Austrian federal provinces Lower Austria and Styria situated in the Northern Limestone Alps
Their mistake: Being out of shape and lacking experience for this climb.
What happened: The four men started their climb on Friday morning from the Höllental and were half way up the Alpenvereinssteig climbing route on the Rax when they got stuck and couldn’t continue climbing and were also too exhausted to climb.
They were equipped with “light” mountain boots, helmets, seat harnesses and other gear however. At 8:00 p.m., they called for help and two Alpine Policeman and five volunteers from the Bergrettung Reichenau reached the four men on the “klettersteig” and used ropes to lower them to safety.
