About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Man Dies on Waterfall

Who: 20-year-old John Erich Gistinger
Where: Oconee County State Park, South Carolina
His mistake: Crossed a stream in a dangerous place – near a waterfall
What happened: A man and two friends hiked to the base of Hidden Falls, then began climbing up the left side of the falls. Partway up the waterfall, the men decided to cross the stream.

One man was able to make the crossing. The next person slipped and fell more than 90 feet to his death.

There are no other details on the story. Read it here.
