About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Search and Rescue Member Dies

Who: Johannes (Hannes) Mullegger, 36
Where: Campton Mountain, Vancouver Island
His mistake: Unknown.
What happened: A search and rescue member was backcountry skiing with friends on Campton Mountain. Some time during the tour, the man fell about 100 feet into a crevasse. Members of the North Shore Rescue were alerted that one of their own might require a rescue. Unfortunately, moments later, the team was told that the man died.

It is unclear how he fell into the crevasse, if he was roped to the rest of the team, if he was skinning up or skiing down. There really isn’t much information.

Team members describe the man as super fit, an experienced mountaineer and an “unstoppable force.”
