About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Separated Hikers Spend Night in Wilderness

Who: Two Hikers
Where: Wells Gray Park, Canada
Their mistake: The two hikers were delayed, separated and disoriented – all in one trip.
What happened: Two hikers were supposed to meet their ride and were delayed. Their friend was supposed to pick them up at a trailhead at 7 p.m. When they didn’t show up, their friend called search and rescue.

The two hikers were disoriented and were forced to spend the night in the wilderness. They were ill-prepared for the trip, but they did have a lighter and were able to light a fire to stay warm.

At sunrise, the hikers continued to search for a way out of the wilderness. One of the hikers crossed a flowing river. The other wasn’t comfortable with crossing the water and stayed behind. For some reason, they separated.

Just before 10 p.m., search and rescue members found footprints and a smoldering fire. One of the men was found. The second hiker was found around 1 p.m.

Both hikers were in good health with some backpacking experience, but had no gear for a comfortable night.

Once again has “some backpacking experience.” What about common sense that’s supposed to come from “experience” ??
