About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Skier Falls 150 Meters

Who: A 54-year-old skier
Where: Austria’s Brobglockner, a 3,798-meter peak
His mistake: Unknown.
What happened: A skier and a few of his buddies went skiing. The skier suddenly fell 150 meters from a wall 3,400 meters up the mountain.

It is unknown if the skier was slashing down or if he was skinning up. The skier narrowly missed two sharp rocks (possibly snow sharks) on the way down. Authorities said that if the skier hit one of the snow sharks, he would’ve been killed instantly.

The skier’s friends gave him first aid and called for help. Authorities arrived and plucked the man off the mountain with a helicopter. It is unknown if the skier suffered any injuries.
