About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

2 Hikers Struck By Lightning

Who: A 25-year-old male and a 23-year-old female
Where: Arctic Valley, Alaska
Their mistake: They went to a mountain top to watch a lightning storm
What happened: Two hikers who wanted to join a lightning storm show on top of a hill were struck by lightning themselves around 6:30 p.m. The bolt of lightning knocked out the male. When he regained conscious, he saw his hiking partner 15 feet away with cuts to her legs and a back injury.

Rescuers hiked and rode ATVs to reach the injured hikers. But because of the seriousness of the injuries and the terrain, the rescuers were forced to hand-carry the woman down. The male hiker was able to walk down on his own, although his shoes were blown open and melted.
