About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Climber Dies in Avalanche, Hundreds Stranded

Who: Sergey Samoilov, of Kazakh
Where: Mt. Qomolangma (aka Everest)
His mistake: They were climbing in extreme snow conditions
What happened: A mountaineer died while descending from Camp 4 to Camp 2. The man turned around because of severe snow conditions. The massive snowfall helped trigger an avalanche that swept the trail the man was hiking on. He died in the avalanche.

More than a hundred mountaineers were stuck at base camp and camps on the mountain. They are forced to ride out the storm until it is safe to travel. There have been six deaths this season on the mountain.
