About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Couple Found on Mt. Hood

Who: 58-year-old David Lee Weitzel and 50-year-old Mary Ann McBurnie
Where: Mt. Hood, Oregon
Their mistake: It looks like they just got lost.
What happened: A couple hiking on Mt. Hood became lost and disoriented for two days on the mountain. They were without food, but it seems like they were drinking out of rivers or streams.

Another couple hiking on the mountain came across the lost couple near the Salmon River. They looked disoriented, tired and hungry, but otherwise in good condition. Initial communication was hard because the couples were on opposite sides of the roaring river which drowned out their conversation.

One hiker went down to the ranger station and called for help, while the other hiker stayed with the lost couple.

Rescue teams responded to the scene and escorted everybody down to safety.
