About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Who: 20-year-old Neublan Zaki N’orhdi, a Malaysian student visiting Penn State
Where: Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Tennessee
His mistake: It’s unknown if he slipped or got crushed by the falls
What happened: W hiker who was with a group of 30 people visiting Penn State went on a hike at a nearby trail. They started hiking at 5:30 p.m. on a marked trail near a waterfall. The trail is marked as “treacherous waters.”

Somewhere along the trail, the man ended up in the water. It is unclear if he jumped into the water, or if he was swept off the ledge by the rushing water.

Rescue workers were called out, but found the man’s dead body in the water.
