About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Falls to His Death With Dog

Thanks to Bergschlawiner of the MRA International Committee and Seattle Mountain Rescue for sending in this story.

Who: A 61-year-old man walking his dog
His mistake: Cause of his fall is undetermined.
Where: Nenzing, Vorarlberg, Austria
What happened: The 61-year-old local man went walking with his dog Wednesday afternoon and was hiking along an un-marked trail heading back down to town when for unknown reasons he and his dog fell 200 meters down steep rock and grass covered terrain. When he didn’t come home at 9:30 p.m., a search was started which involved 120 Bergrettung volunteers, 14 search dogs and 43 local fire fighters. A government helicopter also assisted in the search. The bodies of the man and his dog were found at 10:00 a.m. the next morning.
