About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hikers Struck By Lightning on AT

Who: Four AT hikers
Where: Worthington State Forest, New Jersey
Their mistake: Seems like bad luck. Not sure if anyone was pointing routes with their trekking poles.
What happened: A group of nine hikers were passing through the Kittatinny Ridge when a late-afternoon thunderstorm swept over them. Four of the men were injured when a bolt struck nearby.

One of the victims had a bleeding head wound. It is unclear what injuries the other hikers suffered. Rescuers used a litters and ATVs to transport the group out of the area.

Sometimes you just can’t get off the ridge lines in time. The storms just pop up and hit before you can get your butt down in a safer cove.
