Who: 42-year-old Thomas Denham
Where: Mt. Rainier, Washington
His mistake: None here. Just bad luck. He seemed well-prepared and was with a good group of mountaineers.
What happened: Thomas Denham was climbing Mt. Rainier with a guided group to ascend Mt. Rainier, the most glaciated mountain in the lower 48. The man was on one of the main trails on the south face of the mountain. Denham was on a snow bridge when it collapsed under him. He fell 30 feet into the crevasse before his rope team successfully self-arrested and preventing everybody from tumbling in.
The man was lowered to a snow pile within the crevasse. But instead of setting up a haul system, the team threw down an ice axe and had the man ice climb out on a belay system. The man was in good conditions during the entire ordeal. He was taking pictures the entire time.
The group did not continue to the summit. And the man is still planning to attempt Rainier again and has plans for a summit of Denali.
