About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Missing Boy Found

Who: 15-year-old Josh Fitzgerald
Where: Escalante National Forest, Utah
His mistake: He got lost from his group, but it looks like he did a handful of things right.
What happened: A young boy scout became separated from his group and lost for 32 hours in the wilderness. Complicating the issue, the boy is a diabetic and didn’t have any insulin.

Over the next day and a half, the boy survived by eating plants, drinking water and “jumping off cliffs.” I’m guessing he was just scrambling through the wilderness. He did have a pocketknife, glowstick and a headlamp. I’m not sure how he used these items, but eventually the boy was found by two other hikers.

The two hikers called for help and a chopper was sent in to pluck the boy out of the park. He was rehydrated and given insulin. He was in pretty good condition when he was found.
