Who: Two 16-year-old teens
Where: Ruahine Ranges mountains, New Zealand
Their mistake: They lost the trail in the snow. They should have called for trail conditions.
What happened: Two boys set out for a dayhike to the Rangiwahia hut in the mountains. The popular hike traversed snow and the boys lost the trail in the deep snow. One of the boys called their father and told them they were lost.
Search and rescue teams set out to find the boys. Authorities kept in touch with the boys and advised them to stay in one place, stay motivated, awake and huddle together to stay warm.
They were later found in bad condition. They were cold, but basically uninjured. The team and the boys hiked to the hut where they stayed overnight. They hiked down to the trailhead the next morning.
