Who: 20-year-old Sean Smith, of Bozeman, Montana
Where: Cannon Cliffs, Franconia Notch, New Hampshire
His mistake: It’s possible he didn’t set his gear right, but it could be bad luck.
What happened: A climber who was out with his friend was ascending a cliff when one of his stoppers blew. The man fell and smashed into the cliff, striking the face with his left arm.
His climbing partner gave the man first aid and belayed him down to safety. Conservation officers met them at the base of the cliff and provided additional aid.
Both men are experienced climbers with proper gear. This was their first ascent of the cliffs.
