About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Teen Hiker Goes Towards Lights, Gets Lost

Who: A 19-year-old woman
Where: Canterbury Swamp, New Zealand
Her mistake: She got lost and didn’t hunker down
What happened: A woman who was hiking with a group got separated and lost in the swamp. She was last seen at 5 p.m., but her friends didn’t report her missing until 7:30 p.m.

While the woman was lost, she saw a light and started hiking towards it. Then she got stuck in the swamp and unable to get out.

Search teams located the missing hiker at 3 a.m. She was cold and wet, but otherwise in good condition.
