About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Missing 380-Pound Hiker Found on Appalachian Trail

Who: A male hiker
Where: Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts
His mistake: Unknown. Looks like he just got lost.
What happened: A man weighing in at 380 pounds was hiking 3 miles north of Williamstown and somehow became lost and stranded on a cliff. The man used his cell phone around 11 a.m. to call authorities. For some reason, searchers were unable to use his cell phone to track his location so a search which included teams on foot and in helicopters went looking for him.

A chopper spotted the man on a cliff. Even though the chopper had a visual on the man, rescuers just one half-mile away were unable to find him. Making matters worse, visibility was poor and the chopper was running out of fuel.

Eventually they found the man and he was escorted off the cliff and back to safety.

At first I was wondering why it pointed out his weight, except for him being surprisingly large for a hiker. In the article it says he injured his ankle and it sounds like his weight made it difficult for rescuers to help him get back out. So the weight is more relevant knowing that.
