About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Mount Hood Climber Breaks Leg in Fall

Who: 27-year-old Kristopher R. Haskins
Where: Southwest side of Mount Hood, Oregon
His mistake: It’s unknown. We don’t even know how far he fell.
What happened: A man was climbing the southwest side of Mount Hood near the Sandy Glacier and fell an unknown distance. In the fall, the man broke his leg.

The southwest side of the mountain is very remote, and this time of year is a dangerous time to climb as the warmth melts the snow and starts opening up crevasses. On the good side, more than 200 mountain rescuers were attending a conference at the base of the mountain. The international mountaineering conference was being held and rescuers from around the world were attending.

Roughly 20 rescuers from multiple agencies assisted with finding the man and packaging him up for a heli rescue. The man was plucked off the mountain by a Blackhawk chopper and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
