Who: 16-year-old Bryanna Barnes of San Diego
Where: Sierras near Bass Lake and the Portugese Overlook
Her mistake: She got lost after hiding behind a tree to change
What happened: A girl who was taking a ropes course in a High Sierra adventure program told her group that she was going to change behind a tree. When the girl was done changing, she walked in the wrong direction and became disoriented.
When she didn’t return, the group called authorities and a search began. The girl was forced to spend a night in the forest. She drank from a stream to stay hydrated.
In the meantime, rescuers were searching for her using a loudspeaker and calling her name. The girl, who was carrying a whistle, used her whistle to call back to rescuers. She was eventually found in good condition.
After the ordeal, the girl was able to go rock climbing with her parents, who drove north to aid in the search.
