Who: 21-year-old Julia Giabultowicz and 24-year-old Sophia Giabultowicz
Where: Corvallis watershed, Oregon
Their mistake: They tried to navigate new territory based on someone’s directions
What happened: A couple of sisters were hiking with some friends when they decided to turn around. They were unfamiliar with the territory, so one of the friends gave directions back to the trailhead.
The women were able to get partially back until they found themselves in a forest. They were unable to find their way through the trees. They used a cell phone to contact authorities. Rescuers tracked the coordinates of the women using the GPS chip in their phone. Foot searchers easily found the women and escorted them to safety.
