About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Chopper Spots Injured Hiker 5 km Away

Who: A 38-year-old hiker
Where: Tararua Range, New Zealand
His mistake: Looks like a simple slip with big time consequences
What happened: A man set out for a 24 km hike to a mountain hut. He was an experienced hiker and had all of the proper gear for a winter hike through snow. During his hike, he some how hurt his knee and was unable to hike. He also hurt his knee in an area that didn’t have cell phone service.

The man tried to walk, then was forced to crawl 600 meters through snow before getting cell phone service. He was able to call for help, but he was already shivering and started showing the beginning signs of hypothermia. Temperatures in the area are ready dropped below zero and his feet were numb.

A chopper was sent out to find the man. Because of the darkness, pilots and spotters were using night vision goggles. The man was spotted from 5 km away. The chopper plucked the man from the area and transported him to a local hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.
