Where: Tararua Range, New Zealand
His mistake: Looks like a simple slip with big time consequences

The man tried to walk, then was forced to crawl 600 meters through snow before getting cell phone service. He was able to call for help, but he was already shivering and started showing the beginning signs of hypothermia. Temperatures in the area are ready dropped below zero and his feet were numb.
A chopper was sent out to find the man. Because of the darkness, pilots and spotters were using night vision goggles. The man was spotted from 5 km away. The chopper plucked the man from the area and transported him to a local hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.
