About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker Falls 140 Feet, Dies

Who: Rev. Don Mason
Where: Box Canyon, New Mexico
His mistake: He was hiking alone, and possibly in the dark
What happened: A reverend who volunteered at the Ghost Ranch went out for a hike by himself. Although he preached to always hike with a partner, he thought the hike was safe enough and he had enough experience to stay safe. The man kept in phone contact with his wife on his progress and informed her that he would be an hour late.

When the man didn’t return by 8:30 p.m., she called for help. In the meantime, others at the ranch started their own search. By sunrise, an organized search began with many volunteers from the ranch.

The man’s body was discovered below a 140-foot cliff. It is unclear how the man fell.
