About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Korean Woman Dies in Scorching Desert

Who: 52-year-old Sohee Koo
Where: Mesquite Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California
Her mistake: She hiked on a day that was way too hot
What happened: A Korean woman was hiking in Death Valley National Park with other members of her Buddhist monastery. Temperatures that day were 123 degrees with a ground temperature hovering around 140 degrees.

The group was on a hike back when some of them started to show signs of heat exposure. One woman collapsed on the trail. The group elected to put the woman in some shade and rush to the car for help. As the group got back to their car, rangers who were alerted of the situation, located them. The group showed rangers where their friend lay. But by the time the rangers arrived, the woman died.

Two others in the group showed signs of heat exhaustion, but refused treatment. Rangers recovered the body of the dead hiker.
