About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Lost Teen Found on Mt. Rainier

Who: A 17-year-old boy
Where: Wonderland Trail, Mt. Rainier, Washington
His mistake: He hiked ahead of the group, then tried a shortcut
What happened: A teen was hiking with his family at the base of Mt. Rainier. At some point of the hike, the boy hiked faster ahead of the group, then decided to follow a social trail that led him down the wrong path.

The family noticed the boy was gone and they tried backtracking to find him. They alerted rescuers who initially started to search for him on foot. When there was no luck there, they called in a chopper to assist.

The chopper spotted the boy down a drainage. He was in good condition, just lost. 29 park staff and the chopper were involved in the search.
