One Dead, Two Missing in Andes


Who: 30-year-old Daniel Monton, 68-year-old Takao Mitsui and his guide
Where: Peruvian Andes

What happened: A man was climbing with three other climbers to the top of Esfinge, a summit of 5,323 meters. On the descent, the man fell into a 200-meter deep ravine. The man was killed in the fall. Police were sent up the mountain to recover the body.

In a separate incident, a Japanese climber and a Peruvian guide were climbing Huascaran in the same mountain range. They are overdue and are missing. Authorities are currently searching for the missing climbers.
