About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Rock Climber Injured on Cantara Loop

Who: A rock climber
Where: Cantara Loop, near Mt. Shasta, California
His mistake: Not sure.
What happened: Two men were rock climbing near Mount Shasta. One of the men was apparently tying off some ropes when he fell 10 to 15 feet from a rocky ledge. He continued sliding down a slope and slammed into a tree before stopping. He apparently complained of lower back and neck pain. The injuries didn’t seem to be life threatening.

Approximately 25 rescue team members arrived at the scene for the rescue. They had to set up a system to lower the man further down the cliff to safety. One of the rescuers rappelled with the man who was then transported to a waiting ambulance. The entire rescue took less than four hours.
