About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

2 Hikers Survive Night in Gorge

Who: Two hikers
Where: Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Their mistake: They just got lost
What happened: Two hikers visiting a couple of waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge got lost last week.

They planned to hike to Horsetail Falls, then finishing at Oneonta Falls (pictured above). They were able to use a cell phone to call for help, but during the ordeal, their cell phone battery died.

Roughly 20 rescuers went into the gorge. But the problem in the gorge is there is usually very little light once the sun begins to set. The hikers did not have gear for an overnight stay, but they somehow stayed warm and were able to hike out. The hikers called rescuers and said they didn’t require any further assistance. In the story, it says their cell phone died, but they used a phone to call. Not sure how that worked.

Read the story here.
