About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

College Student Missing in Costa Rica

Who: 28-year-old David Gimelfarb, a doctoral student from Chicago
Where: Rincon de la Vieja national park, Costa Rica
His mistake: It’s unknown, but it looks like he hiked alone
What happened: An American man in Costa Rica has gone missing. The man told friends and family that he was planning a hike through a national park. When the man’s mother didn’t hear from him for days, she became worried and reported him missing.

Local authorities started a search and located the man’s car in the park, but there was no sign of him. Authorities and volunteers from the Red Cross began a search with no success.

The mother is pleading with the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica to allocate more resources to the search, but the response so far has been minimal. The mother told authorities that the man is an experienced hiker and should be able to survive extra nights in the wilderness.
