About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hiker with Injured Arm Rescued Next Morning

Who: A male in his 20s
Where: Shaw Creek, British Columbia
His mistake: Just a simple mistake with bad consequences
What happened: A man and four of his friends set out for a day hike near Shaw Creek. About 500 meters up a mountain, the man fell down a steep embankment and received compound fractures in his arm. He was unable to make his way back up the trail. Two of his friends hiked out for help while the other two stayed in contact with the man.

Search and rescue teams responded to the scene. It was their third rescue in four days. A team with a stretcher approached the man, but steep, rocky slopes made it nearly impossible to reach the injured man with the gear. The team with the stretcher was forced to turn around.

Another two rescuers ascended the hill to get to the man, but they weren’t carrying gear. They were able to reach the man despite some sections where the slope was 80 degrees.

Because of the impending darkness, the two rescuers decided to hunker down with the man while the rest of the team conjured up a plan to extract the man. The team decided to bring in a chopper and pluck him off the mountain.

The rescue was performed the next morning.
