About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Hikers Lost in Rain and Snow Storm Found

Who: Two men in their 20s
Where: Lolo Peak, Montana
Their mistake: They didn’t check the weather and forgot some very important tools
What happened: Two men climbed to the top of Lolo Peak, a 9,140-foot mountain, but took a wrong turn on the descent. Instead of heading down the Carlton Ridge, the men went down the Lantern Ridge and got increasingly lost as they tried to navigate through an expanse of trails and forks. The men did not have a map or compass.

To make matters worse, it started to rain, and eventually the rain turned into snow. The men did have a cell phone and called 911. They told authorities that they weren’t dressed for the weather and they were lost.

Ten members and a dog team were sent into the wilderness to find them. The dog team located the men at 7:30 p.m. They were in good condition, but cold, wet and embarrassed.

Authorities said the men did not check the weather and they also didn’t bring essential items for survival.
