About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Lost Hiker Found by Coast Guard

Who: 18-year-old John Peterson
Where: Spruce Island, Alaska
His mistake: he got lost
What happened: A hiker went out by himself to hike and explore an island near Kodiak, Alaska. A friend reported him missing when the man didn’t return that night. A Coast Guard chopper from Juneau was launched to search for the man. The chopper was unable to find the man.

They then launched a second chopper to assist in the search. The crew of the second chopper located the man who was in good condition. They plucked the man from the island and transported him to a village.
