About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Missing Hiker Found after 5 Days

Who: 47-year-old Ricky Butler, of Dallas, Ga.
Where: Near Hiwassee and Nottely rivers, Georgia
His mistake: He was hiking alone, but there was a lot of bad luck involved
What happened: A man was hiking up a mountain on what seems to be a dayhike. During his ascent, the man fell and lost his glasses. He quickly became disoriented because he was unable to see. While trying to find his way out, the man continually fell, ran into heavy brush and further disoriented himself.

During the ordeal, the man went to sleep with a duffel bag filled with potato chips, crackers, a phone, lighter and cigarettes. When the man woke up from his sleep, the bag was gone. To survive, the man drank lake water to stay hydrated.

On the fifth day, a husband and wife were fishing when they heard the moans from the man. They began screaming for one another to locate him. Eventually they found the man. He was pale, scratched and exhausted. He also didn’t know what day it was.

They helped the man out and found themselves at a campground where a church was having a picnic. The picnickers offered food and water, which the man gladly took. Authorities were called out and said the man should make a full recovery.

What a moron. I went to high school in that area. It's pretty much impossible to get lost unless you're an idiot. Or blind, I guess (in his case).

Wouldn't be surprised if a bear took his duffel bag.
