About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Ski Guide Dies in Avalanche

Who: A heli-skiing guide
Where: Ragged Range, Methven, New Zealand
His mistake: Bad luck, but maybe he shouldn’t have been on that slope
What happened: A heli-skiing guide was checking a slope before four of his clients took a ride down. While he was looking at potential runs, the snow below him began sliding, taking him down along with at least one other skier.

The guide was buried at the bottom of the avalanche for an unknown amount of time. Other guides were able to locate the man and dig him out, but he was unresponsive. The guides continued to work on him for another two hours but were unable to resuscitate him.

The other skier who was caught in the avy complained of back pain, but was otherwise in good condition. Last month, the same guide company lost a client in an avalanche. It was the first death in 30 years for the guide company. Now they have two in less than a month.

Avalanche warnings were moderate for the day, but a spokesperson for the guide company said avalanche warnings have been higher in previous weeks and the trips were a success.
