About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Two Climbers Rescued After Wasp Attack

Thanks to Bergschlawiner of North Bend, Wash. for submitting this story.

Who: Two 17-year old climbers
Where: Climbing the Kanzianiberg on the Finkenstein on Faaker See (Bezirk Villach) in Kärnten.
Their mistake: Accidentally disturbing a wasp nest
What happened: The two young climbers were climbing on the Kanzianiberg when they accidentally disturbed a nest of wasps and were each stung by from 10 to 15 wasps. A rescue doctor and mountain rescuers had to climb up to the teenagers and administer first aid before lowering them off the rock. After being treated, the two climbers declined a helicopter rescue.
