About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Boy Seriously Injured in 40-Foot Cliff Fall

Photobucket
Who: A 14-year-old boy
Where: Sumas Mountain, Vancouver, Canada
His mistake: It looks like he was hiking somewhere he shouldn’t have been.
What happened: A boy and his cousin were hiking in the area near Sumas Mountain. While the boys were scrambling down a steep ravine, one boy fell and landed 40 feet below. His cousin also fell, but the cousin landed in some thick brush and was able to hike out to get help.

The cousin led rescuers up a canyon to where the injured boy was. When they arrived, the boy was 500 meters up the mountain, unconscious and suffering from serious injuries. Rescuers hauled the boy down the mountain to a chopper which transported him to a hospital. Authorities say the boys were in an “extremely treacherous” area that is not intended for hiking.
