About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Elderly Hiker Rescued

Photobucket
Who: A 70-year-old man
Where: Ntunjelaan Pass, Drakensberg, New Zealand
His mistake: His body wasn’t ready for the hike
What happened: An elderly man and hiking companion were on a two-day hike when the man fell ill. The pair assumed he was having a heart attack. They were able to use cell phones to call for help and an airborne rescue launched.

The paramedics quickly got to the men and found that the man didn’t suffer a heart attack, but he was suffering from altitude sickness. The hiker was airlifted to a local hospital.
