About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Father and Son Lose Trail, Eventually Rescued

Photobucket
Who: A 48-year-old man and his 10-year-old son
Where: Flinders Peak, Australia
Their mistake: They may have missed a trail marker
What happened: A father and son successfully climbed to the summit of Flinders Peak during an extremely hot day in Australia. But on their way down, they lost the trail and found themselves and estimated 400 meters off the trail.

When the father realized they were lost, he called for help. Apparently he said the trail in some sections was not marked well and they lost the trail. Authorities say the trail should be marked and there are reflectors in rocky sections that are easy to miss on the hike.

Search crews on foot headed in to look for the missing father and son but couldn’t find them immediately. A chopper, which was also sent in, eventually found the father and son. The lost hikers were then guided to safety.

Authorities are going to ensure the trail is marked properly to prevent a similar incident in the future.
