I know this isn’t the typical Hiker Hell post, but a new Hiker Hell site (launching *hopefully* in the next two weeks), will feature occasional gear reviews. I’ll keep them short and sweet. The first review is a TNF duffel provided by www.luggage.com.
The North Face Base Camp Duffel ($85-$120)
Summary: A bomber duffel perfect for travel or staying organized while driving a few days to the trailhead.
The Good: Heavy-duty PVC Tarpaulin fabric is thick and durable. I would have no problem putting an ice axe, crampons or anything sharp in this bag. This thing is solid. I also love the daisy chain around the bag to tie miscellaneous items to the outside, or latch down to your car rack. Mega plus is the straps on the bag are shaped so you can wear the duffel like a backpack.
The bad: The bag is one big cavern of storage goodness. Only bad part is there aren’t a lot of extra pockets and sleeves to organize your gear in.
The verdict: Get one. Not only does the bag look bomber, but I have seen friends who tie this bag on top of their cars during cross-country trips and the bags are still in excellent shape. If you need a dependable bag for multi-day travel trips, this is the one.
If you’d like me to review a piece of gear, let me know what you’re interested in and I’ll try to get it done.
