Who: A 26-year-old man from Portland
Where: Mt. Hood, Oregon
His mistake: Wrong place, wrong time
What happened: A man was taking an ice and rock class with a non-profit mountaineering group when a large boulder started tumbling down above him. The boulder hit the climber and sent him on a 10-foot fall down the hill to an ice floor. The climber was unconscious for a couple minutes, then was revived. He complained of back and ankle pain, but his injuries weren’t life threatening.
A member of the climbing group called 911 for help. While the call was being made, climbers in the group began making a make-shift gurney out of their gear. Thankfully, members of a local mountain rescue team were nearby on a training mission. They received the call and hiked up to the injured climber.
Both teams completed the make-shift gurney and hauled the man down the mountain to a waiting ambulance. He was then transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A chopper was on stand-by during the entire ordeal, but weather conditions were rainy and windy with a visibility of 200 feet. It was never launched.
