About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Searchers Looking for Overdue Hiker

Photobucket
Who: 45-year-old Joe Christaldi
Where: Pete Lake, Snoqualmie Pass, Washington
His mistake: Bad timing
What happened: A man was dropped off by a friend at a trailhead and began a multi-day loop trail in the Pacific Northwest. During his hike, the man called his friend the next morning to say the weather was terrible and everything was icing over. He was having trouble getting down the mountain and gave the friend a new rendezvous point later that day.

The hiker’s friend waited at the trailhead, but didn’t see or here from him 3 ½ hours after the rendezvous time. That is when she reported him overdue. The sheriff responded and mounted a search. Rescuers have been in cell phone contact with the man, but service keeps on going in and out. They do know the man is stuck near a waterfall and a bridge. Crews told him to stay put until rescue teams reach him. The hiker’s health is unclear.
