About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Who: 42-year-old Zoltan Tombol
Where: Cleveland National Forest, Southern California
His mistake: He was alone, but the ultimate mistake is to be determined
What happened: Zoltan Tombol, a 19-year veteran for the L.A. County Sheriff’s department went out for a hike or jog alone in the Cleveland National Forest. His wife said it wasn’t unusual for the man to go out alone. He was in very good shape and an avid hiker and outdoorsman.

The family knew something was wrong when the man didn’t show up to pick up his son from a friend’s house. The wife immediately called for help and roughly 100 searchers from multiple agencies scoured the area for the man. Search teams used canine units, ATVs, two helicopters and foot patrols.

The man’s truck was found near the Cleveland National Forest. Then, searchers found the deputy’s body. An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.
