About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

2 Women, 1 Dog, 0 Torches, 1 Rescue in Sandia Mountains

Photobucket
Who: Two women hikers
Where: Sandia Mountains, New Mexico
Their mistake: They were overdue and didn’t bring flashlights or headlamps
What happened: Two women walking their dog on a trail were overdue and hampered by darkness. Unfortunately neither of the women brought a headlamp or flashlight so they had a difficult time navigating.

A friend who didn’t hear from them became concerned and notified the local Sheriff’s office. Deputies searched the area and called them on their cell phone. The women picked up and deputies were able to track their location by using the GPS in their phone. They were found around midnight.

Neither the women or the dog were injured. They were just ill-prepared for a nighttime hike.
