Who: Seven Russian Hikers, 5 men and 2 women
Where: Kunlun Mountain Range, China
Their mistake: They were hiking illegally, but there are a lot of holes in the story still
What happened: A group of seven hikers from Russia planned on hiking through the Kunlun Mountain Range for about one month. When the Russians applied for their permit, they were denied and told the Chinese that they would cancel their hike.
Yet the Russian hikers went on their hike anyway. Roughly one month later, the Russians contacted a friend with a satellite phone who lived in China to report that they were lost and one of them was sick.
A four-person rescue team was dispatched to locate the hikers and escort them out to safety. News reports say the hikers climbed a peak of a 7-kilometer mountain and they are currently on their way back to China.
