About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Ballzy Hiker Not So Ballzy on Lizard Head

Photobucket
Who: A 25-year-old man
Where: Lizard Head Rock, Sedona, Arizona
His mistake: He climbed up without planning the climb down
What happened: A man on a bike decided to sit on top of Lizard Head Rock, a rock that looks like a … yah, you got it.

The scramble up was no problem for the biker, but when it was time to dismount the head, the man realized it was too dangerous to climb down and there was no way he was going to go further up.

Instead, the man text messaged his friend to tell him of his predicament. His friend called local authorities for help. Maybe the stranded climber didn’t like how you can’t text to 911?

Anyway, rescuers arrived and found the man perched on a ledge that was 3 feet by 8 feet. It was 30 feet above the ground and 70 feet below a safe point. The rescuers set up a high-angle rope rescue rig using a mechanical anchor system with bolts driven into the ground. The rock around the climber was extremely unstable sandstone that made things tricky.

He was rescued and taken to safety more than nine hours after the man made it to the ledge.
