Who: Photojournalist, Bob Karp, of the Daily Record
Where: Dover, New Jersey
His mistake: He got a little too close
What happened: A photographer for the Daily Record in New Jersey was called to photograph a bear in a neighborhood. The black bear was 300 pounds and hunkered 50 feet up a willow tree in a neighborhood.
The photographer got close to the tree in hopes he would get that award-winning shot. Authorities planned on shooting the bear with tranquilizer darts. Below the bear, a group of firefighters and Fish and Wildlife employees held a net to catch the soon-to-be tranquilized bear.
The first tranquilizer hit the bear. But the bear didn’t go to bed. It defecated and urinated all over the eight nice people holding the net. A second tranquilizer was shot and the bear started to make its way down the tree. It stepped on a branch that snapped below it and the bear tumbled down to the ground. The bear shook off the fall and started to run. It hurdled a fence and charged the news photographer. A firefighter ran passed the photographer while the photographer (always thinking about his job) got a shot of the bear.
The photographer found some cover behind a truck and the bear ran passed. About 100 yards later, the bear went to bed in a backyard. There were no reports of injuries, maybe just some soiled underwear.
