About

Over four years ago, I read “Touching the Void” and I was always intrigued by situation hikers find themselves in and the incredible things they do to stay alive.

This blog is about learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.

“Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat”

Caver Survives Cave Collapse at Fang Mountain

Photobucket
Who: 46-year-old John Huybers, an experienced mountaineer, ice climber, backcountry hiker and skier, canoer and whitewater rafter
Where: Fang Cave Complex, Fang Mountain, British Columbia, Canada
His mistake: Bad luck
What happened: A man was caving with three other friends in the Fang Cave Complex, part of Fang Mountain. While the man was 10 meters down a shaft named “The Corkscrew,” a large section of rock collapsed and crushed the climber. Friends alerted authorities and rescuers started pouring in – including a team of rescuers that parachuted to the scene.

Fifity members of multiple search and rescue teams responded. They found the man with nine broken ribs, a broken collarbone on both sides, a broken shoulder and a crushed finger. Rescue teams used rope and haul system to pull the man to safety. One of the hardest stretches of hauling came in a 30-meter rise at the cave’s mouth called “The Coliseum.” The rescue took about six hours.

The man was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital. He has since been taken out of ICU and is still recovering from his injuries.
